Restaurant Review: Little Georgia Hackney, London

A charming slice of the Caucasus in East London, this retro cafe was my first introduction to the cuisine of Georgia.

During the day it serves cooked breakfasts and a delicious range of salads and sandwiches. While nightfall heralds a menu of traditional dishes based largely on family recipes.

Walking into the restaurant, the cozy space with a few wooden tables lit candles added to the intimacy.

On the menu, you’ll find borscht, beetroot salad or some mixed meze, chashushuli (spicy beef stew cooked in red ajika and tomato sauce) or tabaka (roast poussin with chicken livers and Georgian plum sauce).

An absolute must: the freshly baked khachapuri (traditional cheese bread) – either plain with cheese and an egg or stuffed with beans, smoked pork and onions. it’s like the most delicious cross between pizza, foccaccia and cheese on toast. It’s so delicious and comforting t It is life-changing. You’ll thank me later.

The khinkali dumplings stuffed with flavorful mince are a real Georgian treat, while the pan-fried poussin is garlicky with a walnut sauce - deeply satisfying.

Finally, don’t miss the Georgian wine. If you’re visiting the Hackney location, they operate as a BYOB. If you walk up the block to the corner bodega, you’ll find a small but surprising selection of Georgian wines.
