Each time I exit onto Hwy 74 off I-40 E, there is this particular stretch of highway that opens up, and the familiar view of blue mountains expands before me. My heart beats faster like one does when anticipating that encounter with a lover. Our family has been retreating to these mountains for many years now. I’ve been returning even longer. When I reflect on what I miss about living stateside, it is this special place, a cabin in the mountains tucked in with my kids by the fire that I ache for.
